A balloon helicopter is a toy helicopter made of a latex balloon and a plastic propeller. The most important feature is the hollow propeller hub which directs air into a passage in each propeller blade. The air passages channel air to the blade tips such that air escapes in a fine jet tangentially. The air jets on the blade tips causes the entire toy to spin, the blades have a positive angle of attack so the blades experience a lifting force as they push air downwards. It can attain a height of approximately 12 meters (40

With fresh balloons, it will fly about 2 stories high. Newton's Third Law has to be applied twice in order to explain the upward motion of the helicopter. The exhausted gases force the fan to rotate, driving the air downward. The reaction of wind, in turn, provides the lifting force for the helicopter. Balloons made from latex.

In the past, Oregon State University's College of Forestry was one of several public and private organizations researching balloon logging, and at least one logging company in Oregon ran balloon logging operations within the last 25 years. Loggers and researchers alike found that balloon logging was not cost effective when compared to helicopter and cable logging. Balloon systems using anchored balloons or balloons maneuvered using cables were particularly limited. In addition, balloon logging wasn't very adaptable to partial cutting-- standing trees created dangerous obstacles.

To use the toy you attach one of the two provided balloons, or another balloon of similar size, to the tube with the flair. You blow through the tube to inflate the balloon, and while pinching the balloon to hold it closed, you attach the tub to the hub. Releasing your hold on the balloon allows the air to flow out through the tube, into the hub and out of the hub into the four blades and the whistle on top. The air flowing through the blades and out small holes in the tips cause them to spin, and the blades spinning causes the balloon helicopter to rise into the air. The air flowing out the whistle causes it to make a squeaking noise as the balloon copter rises, which stops when the air is gone, and the helicopter and balloon twist and tumble as they fall gently to the ground.
