You can see in the above photo that the first coat leaves a dull finish, but is starting to fill in the grain of the wood stock. Time to lightly sand the finish before the next coat, using a fine grit sandpaper (400 grit) or steel wool. I started out using sandpaper until after the fourth coat, then switched to steel wool. Upon reassembly, the gun is now fit to be on display! It was a pleasure using the Gun Stock Finish Kit from Birchwood-Casey. Not only a great product, but the kit comes with everything you need from sandpaper to cleaning cloths: nice for those who don’t already have those items laying around. The best part about the Tru-Oil is that it not only leaves you with a finish that is tough as nails, but beautifully shows off the natural grain of a wood stock. Sure, synthetics are nice and lightweight, but nothing beats the beauty of a classic wooden stock… Now it’s time to go shootin’! :)
