I'll start with the basics, and then review the extras, which include: Advanced Lane Guidance: Prepares you for complex exits and intersections, and shows you which lane to be in. IQ Routes, which calculates routes based on real average speeds measured on roads, rather than posted speed limits. Enhanced Position Technology (EPT): Uses inertial sensors to estimate your position when GPS reception is poor, such as when driving through a tunnel or between tall buildings. Voice address input. Speak the destination address rather than using the touchscreen keyboard. A remote control. Hands-free calling. TomTom Services, including fuel prices. Connect and control an iPod. The new-for-2008 GO 930 has the same shape, rounded back, and mounting system as previous TomToms, but sports an all-black finish, rather than the traditional (for TomTom) silver-gray. The GO 930 also has a soft-touch finish on the back for better grip.

Like all TomToms, the One 130-S is extremely easy to use. A tap anywhere on the map brings up the Main Menu, which has nine entries on two screens. The Navigate To screen lets you choose among Home, Favorites, Addresses, Recent Destinations, POIs, Map Points, and Latitude/Longitude. An address entry can be to a city center, a street and house number, a ZIP code, or an intersection. After you select a state, you can enter the city name or the ZIP code. Unfortunately, the One 130-S does not support predictive text. It does, however, provide a scrolling list of entries that match the text you've entered. When you finish entering the address, the One 130-S either calculates your route or asks you which type of route to use (fastest, shortest, avoid freeways, walking, bicycle, and limited-speed routes) before calculating.

My test routes matched those of TomToms and other TeleAtlas-based devices like the Mio Moov 200. The One 130-S's text-to-speech did a good job of pronouncing street names, and its prompts gave you plenty of time to respond. It was also quick to recalculate routes. Its speech volume, however, struck me as significantly lower than that of other units, like the Magellan Maestro 4250 and 4350.

The One 130-S, like all TomTom devices, includes free MapShare updates to its pre-loaded maps of the U.S. and Canada. When connected to a PC via USB, the One 130-S's Home application allows you to add a host of services in addition to map updates. Take accessing GPS Quickfix data, for instance: Quickfix downloads the predicted orbits of GPS satellites for the coming week and helps your device quickly lock onto satellites when it's powered off. All TomToms are also upgradable to RDS-TMC live traffic with the purchase of a traffic receiver ($99.95) and a data subscription ($59.95/year) from Inrix. You can also purchase additional maps, subscribe to fuel-price data, download free community (celebrity) voices for directional prompts (but not text-to-speech for street names), and select from hundreds of free community POI databases.
