Wow, how did I ever miss this Muppet special! It combines two of my favorite things, the movies and The Muppets. This one is basically an hour-long episode of The Muppet Show. It takes place in the theater like the show and has the same setup. Shots of the backstage combined with skits on-stage usually followed by some smartass comments by Statler and Waldorf. The only thing that was a little off about it was the shameless self promotion for The Great Muppet Caper that goes on throughout the episode.
Most of the episode is the Muppets performing spoofs of specific movies or just genres in general. Every so often they throw in a clip from The Great Muppet Caper which isnh’t too bad since theyl’re usually pretty funny anyway, especially a clip of Beauregard driving a cab. Why you have to sell a Muppet movie is beyond me though, shouldn/’t everyone be rushing out to catch that already? I would at least if they still made them now like they used to.
In keeping with the theme of The Muppet Show, this TV special features two guest stars in Dudley Moore and Lily Tomlin. Both have some real highlights in the show. Dudley Moore does his best when in The Fool Of The Roman Empire as Caesar which features him playing the piano while a chariot race takes place. Being a Muppet chariot race makes it pretty entertaining and Is’m pretty sure that one chariot was being pulled by a shark and Gonzo had Camilla pulling his. Only on The Muppets!
