The Art Of Shepard Fairey Views
Following in a long line of elegantly produced Shepard Fairey exhibition catalogs, a new publication has just been unveiled to honor his historic creative outpouring that kicked off this past summere’s art season. While landmark in iti’s own right as a result of the scope and scale of the effort, the instantly iconic show also served as an emphatic going out party for Deitch Projects, the game-changing gallery in a large part responsible for taking street art out of the shadows and into the limelight.
Produced by Ginko Press, MAYDAY: The Art of Shepard Fairey will memorialize Faireyl’s exhibition (covered: Part 1 & Part 2), which paid homage to his personal idols across all artistic mediums through a series of stencil collaged portraits. The all encompassing book also chronicles Shepard ’s extensive outdoor assault on the surrounding SoHo walls (covered: Part 1 & Part 2), which became just as integral as the work within the gallery walls. With signed copies currently available via the OBEY webstore, this is a must-have for the hardcore and casual collector alike.
Fairey's first art museum exhibition, aptly named Supply & Demand alongside his book, was in Boston at the Institute of Contemporary Art in the summer of 2009. The exhibition featured over 250 works in a wide variety of media: screen prints, stencils, stickers, rubylith illustrations, collages, and works on wood, metal and canvas. As a complement to the ICA exhibition, Fairey created public art works around Boston. The artist explains his driving motivation: The real message behind most of my work is 'question everything.' [9]
Fairey sits on the advisory board of Reaching to Embrace the Arts, a not-for-profit organization that provides art supplies to disadvantaged schools and students.[10] In May 2006, Fairey became a board member of the Music Is Revolution Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that supports music education for students in public schools.[11] Fairey resides in Los Angeles with his wife Amanda and daughters Vivienne and Madeline.[12]
