A flip chart is poster-sized notepad attached to a free-standing easel intended for use as a visual aide. Flip charts come in a variety of colors and styles to suit different needs. Some models are made with cardboard sheets, making them stable and durable; while others have removable, self-adhesive sheets for more dynamic displays. While many presenters have moved to high-tech slideshow and video presentations, flips charts are still used because they are versatile, portable, nonelectrical and editable. Any demonstration can make use of flip charts without special training or hardware.

As a visual aid for presenters. Flip charts may be prepared either in advance of the presentation or on the spot. The ones prepared on the spot should appear spontaneous but to be effective must be carefully thought out in advance. Spatially-oriented professions such as engineers, artists and architects, commonly sketch out diagrams and drawings as an adjunct of their thought processes. The more word-oriented professions often have to develop graphic skills. Simple lines forming squares, triangles, circles, and arrows convey ideas and explanations very well. The hurdle is to learn to keep things in proportion and in the proper relationship on the page.

The pages of a flip chart usually are blank, and text, charts and figures are added using markers or pens. The text, charts of figures usually have to be made large enough so that members of an audience can see and interpret them. If a presenter is making notes or drawing on the pages while the presentation progresses, these additions also have to be bold and large enough to be seen.
