How to make your own plate rack. A plate rack enables you display dishware rather than stack plates unseen in a cabinet. Plate racks aren't readily available off the shelf, but crafting your own is quite easy. Lowe's carries decorative accent railing available in oak and maple 2, 4, 6, and 8 foot lengths.

MARKING THE WALL STUDS. At the location and height of the plate rack, find the nearest wall studs with a electronic stud finder, pass the finder slowly back and forth over the wall. The light at the top will glow when the stud finder crosses over the edges of a stud. Mark the center of the stud, about 3/4 inch from the edges.

LEVELING THE PLATE RACK. Position the plate rack on the wall so that one of the shelf brackets aligns with a stud mark. With a electric drill, drive one of the wood screws supplied through a predrilled hole in the bracket and into the wall. Then set a carpenters level on the plate rack railing, level the rack and mark a line on the wall along the underside of the shelf. Remove the level and, with the shelf aligned with the pencil line, drive the three remaining screws through the brackets and into the wall.
