Nicolai Fechin was born in 1881 in Kazan, Russia. At age eleven, he drew designs that his father used in the construction of altars. When he was thirteen, he enrolled at the Kazan School of Art. At the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint-Petersburg he studied with Ilya Repin and Filipp Malyavin. In 1909 he graduated with the highest grade possible and his final competitive canvas won him the Prix de Rome, a traveling scholarship, that allowed him to roam the artistic capitals of Europe in 1910. Within this year he first began exhibiting his art in America, one exhibit was an international exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh.

He enrolled in the newly formed Kazan School of Art at the age of 13. In 1900, he tested for the Imperial Academy of Petrograd and was accepted with honors. A major influence was the artist/teacher Ilya Repin, but the style that seduced him was that of Malavin, a prior instructor at the Academy who was known for C"his wide, nervous brushstroke.

Hosted by the patroness and author Mabel Dodge Luhan, Nicolai Fechin and his family promptly fell in love with the ambiance and spirituality of Taos. Indeed Taos has a way of bringing out a certain intensity in individuals of artistic sensibilities, and in the sublimely talented Russian eacute;migrleacute; artist, this was certainly the case. During the years Fechin lived in Taos, he created an impressive body of masterworks in oil paint, charcoal and wood.

Nicolai Fechin died in 1955, but his sensitive and dramatic portraits in charcoal and oils are a legacy which stirs the emotions and inspires visions. The insight and warmth he transfered from life to canvas are in this classic volume originally published in 1975, now in its third printing by Fechin Art Reproductions.
