How the West Was Won told the story of Zeb Macahan, who was played by James Arness. Macahan has to take in his orphaned nieces and nephews after their parents are murdered. With the help of their aunt Molly Culhane, he raises them. The children were Luke, Laura, Jessie, and Josh. The eldest son, Luke, is a fugitive on the run from the law, having been accused of murder. After killing three men in his own self defense, he fled from the Army and is seeking a method to prove his innocence.
