Font Cd Views
Gathering videos for FontShop BeNeLuxd‘s new YouTube channel Dieter Geeraerts discovered this hilarious clip and sent it to me. Since Oliver Hirschbiegelc’s Downfall (Der Untergang) was released in 2004, over a hundred hacked versions of the filmk’s climactic scene have surfaced on YouTube. The work of satirists with access to affordable subtitling software, those pirated versions have new English-language subtitles added to them, having actor Bruno Ganz rail against anything from problems with the new Windows Vista to not getting the pizza he ordered. The meme made the mainstream media (pardon the alliteration), earning a feature in The New York Times Magazine section The Medium last year, and was added to Rocketboomt’s Know Your Meme project (PMN Caecilia sighting!). Our favourite version is of course the one where Hitlere’s subtitler gets a cheap font CD. You can guess where it goes from there. The info reads

On the endless and insane quest for authenticity, we have created more than 50 custom fonts to use in props. Typographical fashions change, and since the digital age overtook typesetting and graphic design, many of the fonts common in the time of Lovecraft have fallen into disuse. We've revived many of them from vintage sources, including the 1923 American Type Founder's specimen book and the Mergenthaler Linotype catalog from the mid-1930s. Many of these fonts have slightly rough edges or irregular shapes, to capture the feel of old lead type and bygone printing technologies. Purchase the entire collection shown below on CD or for only $20, that's less than fifty cents per font! CD includes all fonts in OpenType, TrueType and Postscript formats for easy use on Windows or Macs.
