Fame is an American television series originally produced between 1982 and 1987. The show was based on the 1980 motion picture of the same name. Using a mixture of drama and music, it followed the lives of the students and faculty at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Although fictional, it was based heavily on the actual Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York. Most interior scenes were filmed in Hollywood, California. In Seasons 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 the show filmed several exterior scenes on location in New York City.

The Fame series' theme song was by singer Irene Cara, and was a hit when the original Fame movie was released.

Fame is a great example of a film crossing over and becoming a very good televison show. The film came out and a was a mild hit in 1980 and in 1982 the show was brought to NBC. Several of the film's cast made the transition. Debbie Allen's character Lydia Grant was a small role in the film, but she became the star and the center of the television series. The early years of the show dealt well with the struggles the students have to achieve their ultimate goal of fame in the entertainment world. The show lost some steam near the end of it's run, but all in all, it was a solid televison drama.
