Dame Stella Rimington, DCB (born 13 May 1935) is a British author, who was the Director General of MI5 from 1992 to 1996. She was the first female DG of MI5, and the first DG whose name was publicised on appointment. In 1993, Stella Rimington became the first DG of MI5 to pose openly for cameras at the launch of a brochure outlining the organisation's activities.[1][2]

Dame Stella Rimington joined Britain's Security Service (MI5) in 1969. During her nearly thirty-year career she worked in all the main fields of the Service's responsibilities - counter-subversion, counter-espionage, and counter-terrorism. Appointed Director General of MI5 in 1992, she was the first woman to hold the post and the first director general whose name was publicly announced on appointment.
