1964. Eleven years after director Byron Haskin directed The War of the Worlds he was back at work directing another science fiction classic - Robinson Crusoe on Mars. These two movies paved the way for many Saturday afternoon movie viewings as a kid on our old black and white television. I didn't know about Technicolor until I saw color televisions at my friends' houses before we finally got one in 1982.

No help is given him by either the screenplay or by Mr. Deschanel, the Oscar-nominated cameraman (''The Natural,'' ''The Right Stuff'') who turned director with ''The Escape Artist.'' Crusoe remains an undefined figure in an empty movie. He never seems anything more than a contemporary actor improvising small bits of business against the beautiful tropical scenery provided by the Seychelles Islands.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars has inspired two songs. One was written and performed by one of the movie’s actors, Victor Lundin (called Robinson Crusoe on Mars it can be found on his album Little Owl). Singer/songwriter Johnny Cymbal also recorded a song called Robinson Crusoe on Mars, released on his 1964 album The Best of Johnny Cymbal.
