The government of Belgium has provided five reach-stackers to the Reli Asset Holdings Company (Rahaco) in Tanzania, aimed at enhancing rail capacity on the central corridor to transport containerised domestic and transit freight. The facility will enable turnaround time of container wagons to be reduced. At a function to launch a reach-stacker at the Ilala depot in Dar-es-Salaam, permanent secretary in the ministry of infrastructure development Omar Chambo – in a speech read on his behalf by Festo Mwanyika, an official from the ministry <– said that acquisition of the reach-stackers will help increase the railways’ market share of container freight. The project is jointly financed by the governments of Belgium and Tanzania. Belgium is supplying the five reach stackers while Tanzania is constructing inland container depots in Shinyanga and Mwanza.
