Cephalometric Radiograph Views
A cephalometric x-ray, also simply known as a ceph, is a diagnostic radiograph used primarily for orthodontic treatment planning, and is taken during the orthodontic records appointment. Cephalometric x-rays are also used by otolaryngologists -- doctors who specialize in the treatment of ear, nose and throat (ENT) disorders such as sleep apnea -- because these x-rays provide a view of the patient's airways.
Cephalometric radiography is a standardized and reproducible form of skull radiography utilized by orthodontists to assess the relationship of the teeth to the jaws and the jaws to the facial skeleton. Standardization is necessary for cephalometry which is the measurement and comparison of points, distances, and lines within the facial skeleton. Therefore, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning rely on cephalometric radiography and those involved in this field should have an in-depth knowledge of this field.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether lateral cephalometric radiographs influence orthodontic treatment planning. It aimed to compare the odds of a change in treatment plan in three groups of orthodontists who treatment planned six cases on two occasions, T1 and T2, with the provision of a lateral cephalometric radiograph being varied.
The availability of a lateral cephalometric radiograph and its tracing did not make a significant difference to any treatment-planning decisions, with the exception of the decision to extract or not between groups B and C for all 6 patients combined, and between groups B and C and groups B and A for patient 4 (Class I incisor relationship on a Class II skeletal base).
