Catan Pc Game Views
Since the game's release, a number of computer games have been published based on Catan and its spinoffs. The first officially sanctioned English-language release was Catan: The Computer Game developed for the PC by Castle Hill Studios and published by Big Fish Games.[citation needed] This off-line game was available from MSN,[8] as it was acquired by Microsoft who also released Catan Online in August 2005 on MSN Games, the game now requiring an internet connection. On June 1, 2009 the MSN version of Catan was discontinued. The same game later became available on other online services. Teuber and Big Huge Games recently worked together to produce Catan, a version of Settlers for the Xbox Live Arcade. It was released on May 2, 2007.
Casual games are supposed to be easy, right? Not in the case of Catan, which is one of the most engrossing and complex casual games we've seen on MSN. This game is a pretty solid PC version of the popular German board game Settlers of Catan, a medieval-themed exercise in resource management for two to four players. The object of the game is to be the first to get to 10 points by building roads, towns, and cities; strategic placement of your settlements will let you get the necessary resources to win, and so can shrewd trading with your opponents. The CPU players provide adequate challenge, especially on expert mode, but the lack of online multiplayer is a serious flaw in an otherwise very recommendable game.
Settlers of Catan is an addictive board game that I first played in 1997 or so. When I was getting into it, I found a bunch of interesting web sites, but no comprehensive lists of links to them. I therefore starting creating my own page of links to Catan sites, focusing on providing useful characterizations of each site. I've also added a downloadable DOS version of Catan, and other PC versions... Check them out!
Playing Catan on PC against virtual opponents has a long history, but the existing version, always missed the one most popular expansion: Cities & Knights. Therefore, it was about time to remedy this situation and finally create an solid AI implementation. This fall, the moment will arrive. The artificial intelligence of the virtual opponents has been thoroughly improved and refined and should offer a real challenge even for experienced Catan gamers. Being the author of the game, Klaus Teuber was closely involved in the project development; the new version was created in cooperation with the Catan Online World team.
