A blackboard or chalkboard is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made with sticks of calcium sulfate, known, when used for this purpose, as chalk. Chalkboards were originally made of smooth, thin sheets of black or dark grey slate stone. Modern versions are often green or brown and are thus sometimes called a greenboard or brownboard instead.[citation needed]

Chalk and blackboard continue to be instruments of enormous value for teaching at all levels everywhere. They have not yet been replaced. It should be noted however that several advances from the computer era have been inspired in such old-fashioned but efficient technology. Computers have begun to occupy the same didactic niche as that taken up by chalk and blackboard. The low cost, accessibility and graphic versatility (text and drawing) of the latter are to be imitated. Progress has certainly been made in the availability of memory (remember notices on blackboards covered in formulae reading: please do not erase ), in the selective elimination of symbols and strokes (which before was done by finger or eraser) in the addition of new information, in the use of color to highlight messages, etc. But to tell the truth we have still not managed to build an authentic digital blackboard .

While blackboard chalk is pretty inexpensive, it is a lot of fun to make your own. When you make your own chalk you can use a variety of molds to form interesting shapes. Cardboard toilet paper cores, small matchboxes and candy molds make excellent choices for molding one-of-a-kind blackboard chalk. Use simple sachet bags to keep the chalk in and to hang next to your blackboard. This project is a quick process and with drying time, you can be writing on a blackboard the next day. Make several sets for your blackboard memo board or give as party favor gifts for your child's class.

Squeeze the rim of the Styrofoam cup to form a pouring spout. Pour the plaster mixture into the cardboard toilet paper tube molds to form your blackboard chalk sticks. Lightly tap the can on your work surface to shake the plaster down into the molds and remove air bubbles. Fill the molds to the top and set aside.
