Belly Button Book Views
Why belly buttons? Why not! Just for fun, I'm including this theme as an alternate to the usual story time topics for February. Every young toddler discovers their belly button at some point. It is a factor of increasing self-awareness and a delightful spectacle to behold. A surprising number of children's authors have written books exploring (forgive the pun) the topic of belly buttons.
♥ The penultimate children's book about belly buttons is the first on my list. Sandra Boynton's Belly Button Book features a tiny hippo with a big belly button who calls it a bebo . There's a belly button song and hippos on the beach in too-small bikinis. This very silly book is available in board book format with a cutaway title page. As with just about any book by Boynton, I recommend this one.
♥ We've All Got Belly Buttons written by David Martin and illustrated by Randy Cecil is an excellent selection for a library story hour. It has rhyming text, bright colors, and animals. This book is really about exploring the parts of your body, and could easily be shared in an active, get off your feet story hour and paired with Eric Carle's From Head to Toe, which invites children to mimic the actions of the animals in his story.
♥ Where is Baby's Belly Button? by Karen Katz is a lift-the-flap board book for babies and young toddlers who are discovering their belly buttons. Since naming body parts is one of the steps in speech acquisition, this is a great starter book for any young toddler's library, and will also work for a toddler story hour.
