Safety pins are commonly used to fasten pieces of fabric or clothing together. They are widely used to fasten cloth diapers (nappies), as the safety clasp prevents the baby from being jabbed. Similarly, they can be used to patch torn or damaged clothing. Safety pins can also be used as an accessory or jewelry, such as earrings, chains, and wristbands. Sometimes they are used to attach a embroidered patch.

Baby safety pins have been used for decades to fasten diapers and hold things together. Safety pins in general have been around since the late 1890's. The invention of these items is attributed to a man named Walter Hunt, who used the invention to pay off a debt. They became popular because they could be used on clothes that were being worn or handled without fear of being jabbed. The metal head holds the pointed wire securely and was changed to a full plastic head for babies in order to reduce the metal edges that might scrape or irritate.

As diaper pins go, these work well. They're VERY cute, and the safety pin head is so big and chunky that it's pretty much impossible to open them by accident. Unfortunately, the tradeoff is is that it's also hard to open or close them on purpose. Even after my husband and I had been doing practice runs of diaper changing for several weeks, it was still taking us about five minutes to get the diapers pinned and unpinned--and that was just a practice run with a teddy bear, not a squirmy baby. I prefer Snappis, but if you prefer pins, these work--it's better to be hard-to-use than to be unsafe. We're still going to use them if our Snappis break.
