From the well-known line of Baby Einstein developmental DVDs comes Baby's First Sounds: Discoveries for Little Ears. Baby's First Sounds entertains babies ages 6 months plus with puppetry, animation, and live-action footage. The DVD also seeks to introduce babies to music and art, as well as expose babies to five basic sounds: ah, buh, duh, ee, and mm, which are important first sounds in several different languages.

In addition to the sounds, babies also hear words, songs and rhymes in English, Spanish, French and Chinese as they watch the colorful images, silly puppets, and live-action sequences. Music is also a key element of the Baby's First Sounds DVD, which is set to classical music performed in the style of a music box.

Your baby will learn to talk during his first two years of life. Long before he utters his first word, he's learning the rules of language and how adults use it to communicate. He'll begin by using his tongue, lips, palate, and any emerging teeth to make sounds ( ooh s and ahh s in the first month or two, babbling shortly thereafter). Soon those sounds will become real words ( mama and dada may slip out and bring tears to your eyes as early as 4 to 5 months). From then on, your baby will pick up more words from you and everyone else around him. And sometime between 18 months and 2 years, he'll begin to form two- to three-word sentences. As your baby makes mental, emotional, and behavioral leaps, he'll increasingly be able to use words to describe what he sees, hears, feels, thinks, and wants.

Let's cut right to the chase here. Baby's First Sounds is pretty much impossible to review. What am I supposed to say? The baby acting sucked? The writing (t"baaa! " r"ball!i") was disappointing. The feature relied too much on puppets and sacrificed storytelling for repetitive images of toy blocks? That it didn't provide enough of a narrative bridge to Young Einstein?
