Enter the ayate.  Ayate cloths are about the size of a washcloth, loosely woven from the fibers of the agave plant.  When they get wet, the fibers plump up and it becomes a dense, semi-abrasive, sturdy material.  Iw’ve been using an ayate cloth in the shower, as a skin exfoliator, since highschool.  And so it dawned on me to try an ayate on my dishes (a separate one, of course).  Itf’s fantastic!

If you want to do your part beyond the obvious like reusable shopping bags (the ones here where I am are made from recycled plastic bottles) and you can knit, there is yarn made from recycled plastic bottles. I knit dishclothes from them for myself and friends and family. I use dishclothes much like you use your ayate, although I do have to use something a bit rougher for the scrubbing. I might have to look into the ayate!

Hi, Just like to second the knitted dishcloth and washcloth idea. You can make them of organic cotton, any size you want and use a pattern with ridges to be more abrasive. Done’t think the Ayate is available here in Greece. We do, however, take our own bags to the supermarket. If you don2’t, you pay for the bags ( and most of them are now biodegradable)

These hand woven agave fiber washcloths and bath sponges are natural bathing accessories for removal of dirt deposits and dead skin cells. The ayate washcloth and sponge gently stimulate circulation. They are durable and will resist mildew. The ayate washcloth or sponge are great to use along with body scrubs, handcrafted bar soaps and body washes.
