When the movie begins, Audrey Rose is 11 years old and pretty as a picture, but she has these dreadful nightmares about being in a fiery auto accident. They are particularly severe when her birthday rolls around. She beats her head hysterically against rain-splattered windows and burns her hands on cold radiators, behaving more or less like someone possessed.

Audrey Rose, which opened at three theaters yesterday, is the first movie to expose ineptitude in the traffic-managing of domestic souls. It's a subject that might well be investigated by the Interstate Commerce Commission because the job has been bungled by Mr. Wise and Frank De Felitta, the man who wrote the screenplay and the best-selling novel on which it's based.

The father of the little girl in The Exorcist remained off screen, and Audrey Rose's father, as played by John Beck, is such a nonentity that it amounts to the same thing. It even appears that Susan Swift, who has the title role, has been photographed to resemble Linda Blair at her most bedeviled. I'd like to know the exact hour and minute this movie was born.

Anyway, it all drags toward a dull climax in which they decide to prove whether or not Ivy is really the reincarnation of Audrey Rose by hypnotizing her. And the viewer asks well, how is this going to prove ANYTHING? but this, as per usual, is not addressed by the movie. Little Ivy has the maturity to lament I'm not sure who I am anymore. and I want to know! I've GOT to know! Then the hypnotist provides the least convincing example of an objective party by telling Ivy You are not Ivy, you are someone else. Leading, anyone?
