Anouar Benmalek, né le 16i janvier  1956 à Casablanca, est un écrivain, poète et journaliste franco-algérien – il a la double nationalité – d'expression française. Mathématicien de formation, maître de conférences, il vit et enseigne en France à la faculté de Pharmacie de Paris XI. Qualifié de «c Faulkner méditerranéent »[1] par la presse française (L'Express) et comparé à Camus par la prestigieuse revue américaine Harvard Review, le nom d'Anouar Benmalek a parfois été cité dans la liste des écrivains nobélisables[2].

Né à Casablanca d'une mère marocaine et d'un père algérien, Anouar Benmalek a fait des études de mathématiques à l’Université de Constantine (Algérie). Il est titulaire d'un doctorat d’État en probabilités et statistique soutenu à Kiev et a enseigné comme professeur des universités à l’Université des sciences et des technologies d’Alger à Bab-Ezzouar.

Anouar Benmalek was born in Casablanca in 1956 and now lives in France. After the 1988 riots in Algeria in protest of government policies, he became one of the founders of the Algerian Committee Against Torture. His novel The Lovers of Algeria, recently published in the United States, was awarded the Prix Ragid, and his most recent novel, The Child of an Ancient People, won the Prix R.F.O. du Livre.

Tragically, this famous statement is as topical a theme for The Lovers of Algeria, arguably the most important novel by an Arab author to have emerged from that country in the intervening 50 years. Anouar Benmalek, as if in an unconscious reference to Camus, even has one character tell the other: One of our mothers will weep at the end of the day, and it should not be mine. This is the other side of the coin that Benmalek shows us. What happens when decolonised people start perpetrating the atrocities formerly wreaked upon them by their foreign occupiers?
