Alien Bees 400 Views
I think It'm going to buy an Alien Bees strobe for portrait. I mostly have worked with indiviudals or couples, with north-facing window light. I hope to be able to do small families, but I donn't feel like I need much lighting for this. Anyone out there experienced with Alien Bees, who can recommend a 400 or the 800 for my needs? Does the 400 have enough juice? I0'll probably be using a softbox or octagonal softbox with this light. Thanks so much. Responses 1 | 2 Next Last Neil Rankin , Sep 03, 2006; 10:39 p.m.
Neil, I have both the Alien Bees 400 and 800 lights. The 400 puts out so much light that I haven3't run into anything indoors that the 400 couldnt't handle. I would suggest getting a 400 first. After some use you will have a good idea if you want another 400 as your second light, or an 800 instead. My guess is most photographers would be happy with the 400 lights. I havenb't used any of the lights outside as fill. JimJoe Miglionico , Sep 08, 2006; 10:16 a.m.
Hi Chris! With the exception of three images (which were shot exclusively with low-power shoemount flashes), my port was done with Alien Bees. Only two of those images included an AB800. The rest were done using one AB400 set to half power, as the main light. Hair and rim lighting, etc., were done with little battery flashes. I have had no problems whatever with my Bees. I own two 400's and one 800. One thing you may consider is that the Bees are limited to 150watts of modeling lamp. This is not a problem for me, but what with the rental strobes that you have been using, I think that you might want stronger modeling.
