Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released all four seasons of ALF on DVD in Region 1. All releases contain edited episodes (syndicated versions), although Try to Remember from Season One, ALF's Special Christmas from Season Two and, Make 'em Laugh from Season Four were full length, although Try to Remember was the censored version used in reruns, and Make 'em Laugh had 7 seconds of dialogue at the beginning removed. Lions Gate insisted that they were forced to utilize the edited version, as it would be cost prohibitive to remaster the original broadcast versions for release when the edited versions were already available, leading to much criticism and poor sales.[11] In addition, most music was removed from the episodes, shortening some episodes by up to six minutes.

Still, after bad casting decisions and bad story ideas, ALF continued to retain much of its charm. While it held true to its formula as a show about a smart aleck alien, the show maintained continuity and did support decent character development. During the first season, ALF struggled to understand our world. Four years later, his frustration comes from being cooped up in the house, unable to walk among earthlings. He's a social animal, being confined to a small circle of friends must be very stressful. Throughout the season, he'll struggle to find more and more ways to get out of the house, ultimately getting the chance to go to a different planet at the season finale.

That is NOT a suitable way to end a show that had run four years. To add insult to injury, Season 4, like all the others, has been released on DVD only as edited s"syndicationa" versions. I've complained about this for all four seasons, but apparently the damage is done. We fans have ALF on DVD, apparently at the cost of two minutes of footage per episode.

On September 22 1986 a brown furry lovable alien named Gordon Shumway crashed his spaceship into the Los Angeles home of the Tanners (Willie Kate Lynn and Brian). They immediately took him into their home and their hearts and named him ALF short for Alien Life Form. For four years ALF lived with the Tanners always elusively avoiding houseguests chasing the family cat (Lucky) eating everything in sight and breaking anything of value. But the Tanners always loved the old ALFer.
