Air Filter Masks Views
There are a handful of companies that specialize in producing air filtering masks specifically designed for cyclists. Theyc’re intended to cut out noxious gases like nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide as well as particulates like asbestos dust from brake linings and black smoke from diesel emissions. Most models cost around $50.
A company called Respro, maker of the Respro Techno Mask, produced the other two masks that ranked highly. They incorporate in some models both an activated charcoal cloth filter and a HEPA filter. Like all masks, the Respro masks restrict airflow and thus reduce maximum aerobic capacity somewhat, but valves allow exhaled air to escape without restriction. It all comes down to a tradeoff between comfort and aerobic capacity on the one hand, and air quality on the other.
Full hood, half- or full-facepiece designs of this type are marketed in many varieties depending on the hazard of concern. They use a filter which acts passively on air inhaled by the wearer. Some common examples of this type of respirator are single-use escape hoods and filter masks. The latter are typically simple, light, single-piece, half-face masks and employ the first three mechanical mechanisms in the list below to remove particulates from the air stream. The most common of these is the disposable white N95 variety. The entire unit is discarded after some extended period or a single use, depending on the contaminant. Filter masks also come in replaceable-cartridge, multiple-use models. Typically one or two cartridges attach securely to a mask which has built into it a corresponding number of valves for inhalation and one for exhalation.
Effective for poor air quality indoors or on airplanes. A porous, lightweight, washable shell holds and seals a disposable carbon filter. Mask fits in a pocket. The adjustable ear loops allow for a personal fit and long wearing comfort, even with eye glasses, goggles or a helmet. Replace filter when breathing becomes difficult or odor comes through even after adjusting nose wire. How long a filter lasts depends upon your sensitivities and environment.
