The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED is another high-quality zoom lens option customized for digital cameras, part of the new DX Nikkor series. Designed specifically for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras with the smaller DX size chip, it features wideangle zoom capability, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and Nikon's exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor). The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur Nikon D-SLR users who demand both the advantages of high optical performance and wideangle focal zoom range. This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum. The 17-55mm focal range gives you angle of views from 28 to 79 degrees on a DSLR; it's effectively the same as using an 26-85mm lens on a 35mm body (but see my footnote under the top picture; the marked focal length may be 17mm, but it doesn't quite get there). For some users, that's the stay-on-camera range they have been looking for. Personally, I find myself at the two extreme focal lengths of this lens all the time. Still, there's no denying that this is a popular and much-asked-for focal length range.

The 17-55mm range exceeds 3x zoom to broaden wide angle to medium telephoto photographic possibilities, and the lens maintains fast f/2.8 aperture throughout to make it practical and easy to use. When mounted on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR camera, the picture angle is the equivalent to 25.5 to 82.5mm on a 35mm [135] format camera.
