New and improved design Like other HP photo printers, the Photosmart 1315 has a rounded, sleek body; a gray, slate, and silver color scheme creates an industrial look for the average-sized 14.5-by-7.7-by-17.6-inch package. A handy setup guide walks you through the process of unpacking and installing the printer in just a few minutes. The printer CD includes drivers for Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP, as well as Mac OS 8.6 and above. The CD also installs several of HP's basic software utilities, including Photo Printing, Photo Imaging, and Share-to-Web. These tools will get you started, but for serous photo work, you'll want to get full-fledged applications.

The Photosmart 1315's output couldn't keep up with its speed; its print quality was average compared with that of other less-expensive photo printers. Unfortunately, the Photosmart's photo quality disappointed us the most. Our test photo, printed at the default settings on HP's Premium Plus Glossy Photo paper, looked dark and oversaturated, with a bit too much red and poor flesh tones. However, advanced hobbyists who are adept at using driver software or photo-editing programs, such as Adobe Photoshop 6.0, will have little trouble tweaking their photos. Both plain- and coated-paper text looked good, although we did notice some stray dots. On our graphics document, the Photosmart 1315 really shined, with excellent color matching, sharp details, fine lines, and smooth gradients throughout. Hide Review Next page
