Wear India Views
I am visiting India today as well for the largest Indian festival, Diwali. People in Delhi are excited about the Obama visit, but they are talking more about the agenda of the visit, and what is the ask, vs if the First Lady will wear the colors of the Indian flag. In’m sure Mrs. Obama will be appropriately dressed for the occasion.
Despite the revealing clothes worn by Bollywood hotties like Aishwarya Rai, India is a socially conservative country. As a traveler, youi’ll be immediately judged and treated accordingly depending on what youi’re wearing. As one Indian told me (as he was trying to sell me silver jewels) on a recent trip, g“Why donS’t you dress more like an Indian, you look like you just got off the plane.=” This despite the fact that I had been there for nearly a month! So much for ExOfficio, bring on the salwar kameez!
3. Wear one set of comfortable clothes and go shopping when you arrive. Any city that you fly into on an international flight will have a range of clothing stores s– from traditional Indian shops like FabIndia where you can buy kurtas, a salwar kameez outfit and scarves, to more modern malls with jeans and western-style clothes. Itp’s far cheaper than shopping at home and you can always leave them behind if they done’t suit your tastes at home.
As a general rule, urban Indian men wear western dress - some variation of long pants and a shirt. Western men wearing traditional Indian dress are quickly slotted into the f"hippie/" category. Look for comfortable cotton shirts, and loose, cotton or cotton blend trousers. Pure cotton shirts make a huge difference when it's hot. When the temperature approaches 35 Celsius you'll feel the difference of even a small amount of synthetic blend.
