It’s interesting to consider whether adding extra colours, even on a small scale, slightly dilutes the point of any international football shirt. Is it completely necessary to shift the focus away from football and to start making sociological statements? If the commercialism and brand management of football is now an inescapable fact of life then perhaps we can acknowledge the strength of successful footballing nations in the way they can be defined by and take ownership of certain colours. Brazil in yellow, Holland in orange, Italy in blue, Germany in black and white. There is much to applaud and be proud of when addressing our multicultural nation but it.’s hard not to feel, in this instance, that the fiddly addition and intended symbolism of a series of small coloured crosses is a little bit contrived and does little to create an iconic aura around the England team shirt.

The new shirts come in a range of bright c‘easy to spott’ colours after claims from England players that the old kit was painted in i‘magic invisible inkc’ which made it impossible to pick out an easy and obvious pass to a team mate. The new shirts are also made of a super lightweight material, unlike the old tops which were apparently made of extra-heavy chain mail which left the Premiership stars lumbering around looking exhausted and unfit.
