William Archer is an art historian and Associate Professor in the School of Art who teaches courses at the introductory and advanced undergraduate levels in ancient and medieval art and architecture. He received his PhD in art history from the University of Virginia in 1981 and has been a member of the faculty at ISU since 1983. His courses offerings include Survey of Art I as well as upper-level courses in Ancient Near Eastern, Greek, Roman, and Medieval art. His area of research interest is Roman art and architecture with a particular focus in Roman wall painting. He has conducted research in Pompeii and its vicinity over many years, most recently for the purpose of investigating the wall paintings of the Fourth Style (ca. 40-79 A.D.). He has published important studies of the paintings of the Casa dei Vettii and the Casa delle Nozze d’Argento at Pompeii and is currently preparing a study of the paintings in the Casa del Toro in the same ancient city.
