Under The Overpass Views
I live right near the overpass of a highway. Under this overpass dwells a man I call Mitchy the Bug. Mitchy’s real name (or so he tells me) is “You’re Dick.” That’s not a typo on my part. He told me, in very specific terms, that Your is spelled You’re. Whatever. I guess your (or you’re) priorities are shifted around a bit when you live under a road in the sky.
As a matter of fact, it's given me the opportunity to read a book that I've been anxious to get around to, Under the Overpass by Mike Yankoski. Yesterday, while the kids were happily playing a Wii tournament with Dad, I curled up under my covers in a nice comfy chair and read the entire book. I can't remember the last time I did that.
Under the Overpass is the story of two college guys who voluntarily decide to live on the streets as homeless men for five months. They spend between 3-4 weeks each in six different cities so they can experience what it is like to be homeless: Denver, Washington, DC., Portland, San Francisco, Phoenix, and San Diego. This book takes very little time to get into and is a quick read. I felt like I was along for the experience and was surprised, no appalled, to hear how many churches treated less desirable people in our community.Under the Overpass is great eye-opener and would be a great intro for groups heading out on mission trips to help the less fortunate and for those that need a wake-up call.
