The Little House Books Views
Important note: A few of the Martha, Charlotte, Caroline, and Rose books were republished in heavily abridged editions. You can recognize the abridgments by their photographic covers (pictures of real girls). The orginal, unabridged editions have illustrated covers. I highly recommend looking for the originals! What is so fine and enjoyable about these Little House books? First, they take the reader out of his own world and into different places and earlier times, into the Iives of the pioneers on the prairie in the 1870s and 1880s. What thrill there is in reading about the milkman or the neighborhood grocer. Second, they make the reflective reader thankful for all the blessings we enjoy in the United States today. Laura writes of the fun she had as a girl on the prairie and the happy times with her family, but she does not romanticize her experiences. Life was hard in those days in an untamed land.
The Little House Books are stories of long ago. Today our way of living and our schools are much different; so many things have made living and learning easier. But the real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong. Great improvements in living have been made because every American has always been free to pursue his happiness, and so long as Americans are free they will continue to make our country ever more wonderful.
The little house stood in the country, with trees and fields around her, and with the birds and flowers and children for company. In the distance twinkled the lights of the big city, and the little house wondered what it would be like to live there. One day steam shovels dug a road in front of the little house, and soon she was surrounded by houses and stores. Then tall skyscrapers rose on either side of her, elevated trains roared past her, and a subway shook the ground under her foundations. She longed for a glimpse of the stars and the scent of apple blossoms, but she was caught by the big city. Then, when she was so old and shabby that nobody wanted to live in her, she had an unexpected chance to escape.
