Paul Freund Views
Paul Freund was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Massachusetts Historical Society and a fellow and past president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received more than twenty honorary degrees.[6] In 1975 the National Endowment for the Humanities selected Freund for the Jefferson Lecture, the U.S. federal government's highest honor for achievement in the humanities. Freund's lecture was entitled Liberty: The Great Disorder of Speech, [7] and was later published in The American Scholar.[8] In October 2006, an exhibit entitled Balancing the Truth: Paul Freund 1908-1992 at the Harvard Law School Library marked the opening of the Paul A. Freund papers.
Paul Abraham Freund was born Feb. 16, 1908, in St. Louis, the son of Charles Freund and the former Hulda Arenson. He earned a bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1928, a bachelor of laws degree from Harvard in 1931 -- serving as president of the editorial board of the Harvard Law Review -- and a doctorate in law, also from Harvard, in 1932.
Paul A. Freund, the University Professor who taught at Harvard Law School since 1939, was a law clerk for Justice Brandeis in 1932-33. During the Roosevelt administration, he served in the Treasury Department and the Solicitor General-rs"s Office. He not only taught constitutional law, but also the legal process of reasoning relating law to ethics and semantics.
