You should use vegetable tanned leather or what is called tooling leather to make embossed leather. This type of leather is softer and easy to work with. The leather included in leather embossing kits are tooling leather. Most briefcases, saddlebags and leather items like that are also vegetable tanned leather.

Leather embossing is the act of stamping or pressing an object into the leather so that it leaves an impression. Embossed leather does NOT have any leather cut out, like in leather tooling. When you see a fancy saddle with big designs that have been cut out of the leather, that is NOT embossing. That is leather tooling or leather working, where they actually cut out pieces of leather to make a design or pattern.

Making your own leather belt can be a rewarding experience. Customizing it even more so. Embossing is a process that allows you to imprint the belt with your own designs, including textures and lettering. While stamping involves making an impression from the top of the leather down, embossing is the opposite. The texture or die is placed under the leather and pressed into it from behind. Professionally made dies can be very expensive to purchase, so the best thing for a hobbyist to do is to make her own. Textures are all around us; we just need to look for one that interests us. Using it to emboss leather is no different than imprinting a piece of paper with the side of a lead pencil.

Embossing and painting are great ways to spruce up inexpensive leather articles, or to make a show piece out of any leather bargains you may find. Embossing is creating raised designs on the surface of leather. Correct embossing gives the leather a beautiful, professional-looking finish. Painting leather can really jazz it up with color. To do either requires special techniques, as working with leather is not like working with fabric.
