Watercolor and pen and ink bring a unique quality to any painting. The pen and ink serves as the texture in the design while the watercolor adds interest to it. Use watercolor to color and shade the images and add a subtle blend of shading and texture with pen and ink. Watercolor should be applied first. Waterproof ink is added after the painting is completely dry.
This is one of my favorite techniques, for its freshness and seeming spontaneity, though of course the ink drawing can be as simple and loose or as complex and detailed as you care to make it. It DOES offer a framework, a guideline, to hang washes on, and I find it liberating. I was surprised not to be able to find a Flickr group devoted to this combination, though there were quite a few tags that included it...so of course I had to start one! My students asked me for years to do a workshop or online class on this technique, and it's in the works for the future, but to give them something in the meantime I just finished a new CD with a slideshow and PDFs...and now a Flickr group pool! Please feel free to add your artwork to this group pool, if it's done with ink and watercolor!
The Pen and Ink and Watercolor Wash Sketching Tip Sheets include instructions, tips, and three reference photos. Under each photo there is a postcard size work area to make a pen and ink line drawing. A smaller area to plan the composition for a second watercolor wash sketch is included on each practice sheet as shown above.
