Best Illustrated Views
“The judges this time around were Robert Sabuda, a co-creator of the best-selling p‘Encyclopedia Prehistorica ’ series and twice the recipient of a Times Best Illustrated award; Elizabeth Bird, a children’s librarian with the New York Public Library, whose first picture book, :‘Giant Dance Party,s’ is due out next year; and David Barringer, a novelist and designer who is the author of d‘There’s Nothing Funny About Design.s’ “
This month The New York Times released it’s “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2010” review. The review has been released annually for more than 50 years, and as a lover of illustration, it’s one of my favorite things to read. I am amazed by the ability illustrators have to translate a story line into whimsical images via a multitude of mediums. I hope you find as much enjoyment in browsing the winners as I did:
“A grand new book from the Carter Museum, The 100 Best Illustrated Letters of Charles M. Russell, brings the view of Russell-as-correspondent into crystalline focus…. The crowning touch is a removable facsimile letter, complete with envelope, which lends the dreamlike illusion that one has received a piece of correspondence from the Great Man his ownself.”—Fort Worth Business Press
I admit I have not read all 10 of the books on the 2010 list but I made a point of tracking down the top 5 and while all 5 books get a thumbs up as far as content I'm afraid I was not overly impressed with the illustrations. This is a 'for the future' task - putting together my own list of 'best illustrated children's books' I am sure it will include some of my favorite Michigan Children’s Books authors and illustrators.
