Civil War Service: listed at www.civilwar.com as enlisting 1/11/1861 as private into K Co. 2nd NC Calvary. There is no date/method of discharge given. He was 1 of 17 men wounded at Brandy Station, VA 6/9/1863. On same date, 4 were killed and 2 taken POW. A family member told me James was shot in the face. You can see James' injury to his face in the photograph (see above). James was listed as absent/wounded on 11/31/1863. His brother Henderson Asbell enlisted in K Co on the same date. He was taken POW 6/9/1863 at Beverly Ford, VA. (kindly provided by Dee)
